He Mni Can (Barn Bluff)
Barn Bluff, recently renamed He Mni Can to honor its Dakota heritage, stands as a prominent feature in Red Wing. The bluff rises approximately 340 feet above the Mississippi River, offering panoramic views of the city and surrounding landscapes.
There are many parking spaces directly at the base of the bluff near the trail head, however this is a popular destination during the warmer months. The parking lot can fill up in the afternoon on nice days.
There are a variety of trails connecting in loops that allow hikers to explore the bluff.
South Trail
This 0.6-mile path starts at the Woodland Junction and runs along the southern edge of the bluff. This route is considered the easiest way to reach the summit, making it suitable for families with children. The South Trail is 0.6 miles to the West Scenic Overlook.
North Trail
For those seeking a more challenging hike, the North Trail offers a steeper ascent with rewarding vistas. This primitive, single-track trail runs along the northern edge of the bluff. This trail is more difficult and dangerous than the South Trail and is not advisable for young children. This trail is closed during the winter months (generally November-April) for safety. The North Trail is about 1.0 miles from the Woodland Junction to the West Scenic Overlook.
Prairie Trail
The Prairie Trail is an easy, leisurely trail along the summit of the bluff stretching from the West Scenic Overlook to the East Scenic Overlook. This is an out-and-back trail with a total length of 1.1 miles. It is usually breezy at the top of the bluff along this trail and wind gusts can be high. The East Scenic Overlook was a family favorite spot growing up to bring a picnic lunch and fly kites at the end of the trail.
At the summit of He Mni Can, hikers are treated to beautiful views of the Mississippi River and the city of Red Wing. The combination of natural beauty and cultural significance makes He Mni Can a must-visit destination and a local favorite.
Memorial Park
Memorial Park provides a serene environment with trails that meander through blufftop prairies. The Red Wing Memorial Park Loop Trail is a lovely 4.4 mile long trail with 442 feet of elevation gain that brings you around the park and offers solitude, wildlife watching, and birding. The park’s elevation offers stunning views of the Mississippi River and the bluffs of both Minnesota and Wisconsin. There is a frisbee golf course at the park as well that is popular among families.
Cannon Valley Trail
The Cannon Valley Trail stretches 19.7 miles one-way, connecting Red Wing to Cannon Falls. Built on a former railroad line, this paved trail is a fun and scenic route along the Cannon River. You will see people biking, skating, and skateboarding as well as walking on this trail.
The gentle terrain makes it ideal for families with strollers or young children. Along the way, visitors can enjoy the peaceful surroundings and often spot local wildlife. The last three times my family has been on this trail we have seen a large turtle right on the trail. There are lots of little bridge crossings that make it fun for kids, too.
A daily pass is required for adults. The cost is $7. These can be purchased online or money can be left in a dropbox at the trailhead. Dogs are not allowed on the trail. Did you know? – Cannon Valley Trail
Goodhue-Pioneer State Trail
This 12.1 mile out-and-back trail is relatively flat and another great way to enjoy the beauty of the area. The trail begins in Hay Creek, where youโre likely to see other people enjoying the trail on horseback. As the trail winds through Hay Creek you are treated to creek crossings and lots of potential wildlife sightings. Take the trail as far as youโd like into Red Wing before turning around and heading back to the trailhead.
Frontenac State Park
Situated just 15 minutes south of Red Wing along the Mississippi River, Frontenac State Park offers a variety of trails suitable for all ages. The park features several loop trails, some as short as a mile, making them perfect for families with young children. The parkโs most popular trail, the Bluffside Trail, is a 2.5 mile loop with 400 feet of elevation gain that gives visitors really spectacular views of the Mississippi river.
