    America is often called a melting pot, and nowhere is this more evident than in our street food. From coast to coast, our vegetarian street eats tell the story of immigration, adaptation, and innovation. It’s like a history lesson, but way more delicious!

    I am a seasoned traveler, and one of my favorite things to do at each place we stop is try some local, authentic food. I always feel more deeply connected to the local culture, which enriches the travel experience. Here I will cover the different types of cuisine that are staples to different regions of this vast country.

    Pacific Northwest: Food Cart Pods in Portland, Oregon

    Portland, known for its quirky charm and thriving food scene, has taken street food to the next level with its famous food cart pods. These clusters of food carts offer a diverse array of cuisines, including plenty of delicious vegetarian options.

    Where to Get Your Veggie Fix:

    • The Whole Bowl: A Portland institution, serving up simple yet delicious rice and bean bowls with their famous “Tali Sauce.”
    • Bing Mi: Try their vegetarian jianbing, a savory Chinese crepe that’s a perfect handheld meal.
    • Potato Champion: Late-night favorite offering gourmet fries and vegetarian poutine.
    • Dirty Lettuce: My personal favorite. They call their food “soul food,” and they aren’t joking. They feature Cajun, Creole, and Southern classics that are to die for. You can even get vegan fried catfish here. My favorite go-to is the popcorn chicken bowl.

    Portland’s food cart scene is a testament to the city’s innovative culinary spirit and commitment to supporting small businesses. It’s a great way to sample a variety of vegetarian street foods in one location, making it perfect for families with diverse tastes.

    The food cart pods also reflect Portland’s community-oriented culture. Many pods feature communal seating areas, creating a casual, friendly atmosphere where locals and tourists alike can mingle and enjoy their meals together.

    My family was fortunate enough to get to live in Portland for 3 months back in 2021, and we visited a food cart pod at least once a week. It is such a fun, immersive experience! 

    For parents looking to introduce their kids to new flavors, Portland’s food carts offer a low-pressure way to experiment. With so many options in close proximity, it’s easy to find something for even the pickiest eaters while still trying new and exciting vegetarian dishes.
