The Black Hills, located in southwest South Dakota, is an awesome destination for a family vacation. This area is full of beautiful rolling hills, vast landscapes, loads of wildlife, and lots of history. We have visited the Black Hills of South Dakota many times, and there is so much adventure to be found there. Here are the top things to do in Black Hills South Dakota, especially for a family that loves to get outside and explore!
Table of Contents
Hiking Black Elk Peak
At the top of the list is the most fun and challenging recommendation on the list. As the highest point east of the Rockies, this trail offers incredible panoramic views spanning four states.
As someone who grew up in the Midwest, itโs hard to believe youโre still in South Dakota when you get to the peak of this hike- the views are breathtaking. There is an old fire tower at the top you can climb up thatโs fun for kids to explore.
The hike is 7.1 miles and 1,469 feet of elevation gain and listed as moderately difficult. We were able to do it with our 4 year hiking and the baby in the hiking backpack. Just be prepared for lots of stops and lots of snacks- it is a long one. If you do it in the summer please bring more water than you think you will need. There were multiple S&R rescues the week we were there.

Exploring Custer State Park
Custer State Park is a wildlife lover’s paradise. You will definitely see bison, and maybe even elk and bighorn sheep roaming freely. There are a variety of hikes besides Black Elk Peak that I covered earlier.
A must-do in Custer State Park is kayaking at Sylvan Lake. The calm waters are perfect for novices, and the massive granite shooting out of the lake makes for stunning photos. You can rent kayaks from Sylvan Lake Lodge. You pay at the lodge, and they have the kayaks right down at the lake.

Scenic Drives
The Black Hills boast some really special scenic drives. The Wildlife Loop Road in Custer State Park offers close-up views of the park’s diverse wildlife.
I have an in-depth guide to the Wildlife Loop- it’s a must-see! Custer State Park Wildlife Loop: Adventure in the Black Hills.
For a more dramatic landscape, take the Needles Highway, where you’ll wind through towering granite spires and narrow tunnels. Needles Highway is where youโll find the โNeedleโs Eyeโ and get the iconic photo of your car squeezing through the rock.
The clearance in this tunnel is 8โ0โ wide and 9โ9โ high!
These drives are a great way to enjoy the beauty of the Black Hills of South Dakota.
Biking the George S. Mickelson Trail
Stretching 109 miles through the heart of the Black Hills, the George S. Mickelson Trail is perfect for families who enjoy cycling. This is an out-and-back trail connecting Deadwood and Edgemont, not a loop trail. It is converted from an old railroad, and there are still lots of old railroad bridge crossings. Itโs pretty neat.
You will need to purchase a trail pass, which can be done at any of the numerous trailheads.
Wind Cave National Park
Venture underground at Wind Cave National Park, home to one of the world’s longest cave systems. The cave is famous for its unique boxwork formations, which are intricate calcite structures that resemble honeycomb. Guided tours are available for all ages, providing an educational and exciting experience for the whole family.
Above the cave are vast rolling plains where herds of bison can be seen roaming. There are over 30 miles of hiking trails above ground as well.
Jewel Cave National Monument
As the third-largest cave system in the world, Jewel Cave offers another subterranean adventure. Various guided tours cater to different abilities and interests.
When we visited Jewel Cave we did the Scenic Tour tour. This was perfect for our family. We really enjoyed the tour. Our 4 year old had no problem walking along the tour himself, and we had the baby in a baby sling.
Spearfish Canyon
Spearfish Canyon is a beautiful canyon with waterfalls that offers scenic drives, hiking trails, and opportunities for rock climbing. The canyon’s towering limestone cliffs and cascading waterfalls provide a stunning backdrop for family photos.
Mount Rushmore National Memorial
No visit to the Black Hills is complete without seeing Mount Rushmore. Visit during the day to learn about its history and creation, or attend the evening lighting ceremony for a magical experience. You have to pay for parking, but the view of the monument is easily accessible. Itโs worth a quick stop even if youโre not a history buff.
Crazy Horse Memorial
The Crazy Horse Memorial, an ongoing sculpture of the Lakota leader, offers insight into Native American history and culture. The on-site Native American Educational and Cultural Center provides interactive exhibits and demonstrations, making it both educational and entertaining for families. We enjoyed this more than Mount Rushmore.
However, if youโre short on time, you can get a good view of Crazy Horse from the highway as you drive by.
Deadwood
Step back in time in the historic town of Deadwood. Known for its Wild West history, Deadwood offers reenactments, museums, and family-friendly attractions. Kids love the opportunity to pan for gold and explore the old Wild West.
Mammoth Site in Hot Springs
The Mammoth Site in Hot Springs is a fun stop for any young dinosaur lover. This active dig site allows visitors to witness ongoing excavations and learn about prehistoric life. The site offers hands-on educational programs that spark curiosity in young minds.
Tent Camping in the Black Hills
For families looking to immerse themselves in nature, tent camping in the Black Hills is an excellent option. The Black Hills National Forest offers numerous campgrounds with varying levels of amenities. Camping allows you to experience the region’s natural beauty up close and allow you to feel more connected to the region.

We stayed at the Custer/Mount Rushmore/Black Hills KOA and it was a nice experience and a central location for everything we wanted to do. I would recommend staying here.
