If you have been to Western Wisconsin, you know how beautiful the river valleys are. My home base is Western Wisconsin, and every time we return home I am reminded of just how beautiful this area is. There are 3 Western Wisconsin State Parks that highlight the state’s beauty, and in my opinion, are best experienced in the fall.
Fall in Western Wisconsin is a magical time of year. The leaves change from green to vibrant shades of red, orange, and yellow, creating a stunning landscape that attracts visitors from all over. The fall colors juxtaposed with the dramatic rivers and waterfalls make for incredible scenery. Each park offers unique features, activities, and views that make them perfect fall destinations.

Nestled in St. Croix County, Willow River State Park is a gem of Western Wisconsin. Spanning over 2,800 acres, this park is home to diverse landscapes, including forests, prairies, and river habitats. The park’s centerpiece is the stunning Willow Falls, which draws visitors year-round but is particularly enchanting in the fall.

This 1,242-acre park is known for its rugged bluffs, scenic river views, and rich biodiversity. It’s a paradise for outdoor enthusiasts, especially in the fall when the foliage adds a colorful backdrop to the park’s natural beauty.

Kinnickinnic River: The park’s namesake river is a focal point for many activities. Its clear waters are perfect for kayaking and canoeing, offering a peaceful way to explore the park. Fishing is also popular here since the river is teeming with trout.
Hiking Trails: Kinnickinnic State Park features several well-maintained trails that wind through forests, prairies, and along the river. The Puff Ball Trail is the most popular and a favorite for the variety of forest flora and fauna.

Interstate State Park, straddling the Wisconsin-Minnesota border, is Wisconsin’s oldest state park. Covering over 1,600 acres, it offers a mix of geological wonders, river views, and diverse recreational opportunities. In the fall, the park’s natural beauty is enhanced by the vibrant foliage, making it a must-visit destination.
Park Highlights
Glacial Potholes: One of the park’s most unique features is its glacial potholes. These ancient geological formations were created by the swirling waters of melting glaciers thousands of years ago. They provide a fascinating glimpse into the park’s geological history and are a hit with both kids and adults.
St. Croix River: The St. Croix River runs along the park’s western edge, offering beautiful views and plenty of recreational opportunities. Minnesota’s Interstate Park is visible across the river. Boating and fishing are popular activities, with several access points available. The river’s calm waters are perfect for a leisurely paddle, especially with the fall colors reflecting off the surface.
Hiking Trails: Interstate State Park features an extensive network of trails that traverse forests, rock formations, and riverbanks. The Ice Age National Scenic Trail begins in the park, and it’s really fun to complete a portion of this, either as a day hike or a backpacking trip. My husband and I completed our first backpacking trip on this trail, and used it as a practice run before backpacking at Yosemite National Park!
Rock Climbing: For the more adventurous, Interstate State Park offers rock climbing opportunities. The park’s cliffs and rock faces provide a challenging playground for climbers. It’s a great way to experience the park’s rugged beauty up close.

Peak foliage is typically the second week of October. Of course this varies, so you can always check online before you go.
Additional Western Wisconsin Attractions
Of course the State Parks are beautiful, but really the whole St. Croix and Mississippi River valleys become magical in the fall. If you want to round out your trip with additional stops, I highly recommend accommodation and dining along one of the rivers.
